January 4th, 2018 Special Meeting of the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association

The all-volunteer board of the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association will be holding a special meeting on January 4th to discuss the homeless shelter planned for SE 61st and SE Foster Road.

Join your neighbors for an hour of conversation about the shelter, moderated by our partners at Southeast Uplift.

After a group discussion, the board will meet for a work session to discuss input received. The purpose of this board conversation is not to take a position on the shelter or to hold a vote. The board will be reflecting on community comments, sharing information, and discussing what role, if any, the Foster-Powell Neighborhood Association may serve. Attendees are welcome to stay for the board conversation to observe.

A meeting agenda with more information is available here.

Date: Thursday, January 4th
Time: 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Location: Portland Southeast Community Church of the Nazarene 5535 SE Rhone St.

More information about the proposed homeless shelter is at https://owlxco.com/fpna.

For all those complaining about the shelter and the presence of car campers and RVs, the data is in: Domicile Unknown 2016 finally breaks down deaths by something other than age and drug of choice if any. Fully 40% of homeless deaths in Multnomah County in 2016 occurred outside, compared to 14% for motels and shelters combined, and 11% in cars and RVs. You can talk and talk and wail about shelters and the ‘bad elements’ they allegedly attract, but living somewhere–ANYWHERE– is significantly correlated with being less likely to DIE. So what are you really saying about yourselves when you’d do ANYTHING to keep a shelter ANYWHERE from happening? Don’t cloud the data with complaints that someone should do more. We all know that already. You are not the ones ‘losing out’ with all your protests and fury. It is the people with no home who are losing out as you seek any justification to maintain the status quo.

Because so many people were locked out of the Kafouri/Wheeler public meeting about the shelter (a couple weeks ago) …. we were promised that night that another meeting would be scheduled ASAP and held in a larger venue. Does anyone know when that meeting is scheduled?

    Thanks for any info.
